How to Excel at Strategy and Execution

For organisations to be successful, leaders need skills in both developing and executing strategy. While research suggests only a very small percentage of leaders excel at both strategy and execution, leaders across the sport and NFP sector typically have small teams and need to be comfortable working across both strategy development and execution.

This Harvard Business Review article discusses the factors how to close the gap between strategy and execution and identifies that leaders who master both do the following:

1. Build a bold but executable strategy.

This requires leaders to have addressed the questions of “What are we great at?” and “What are we able to achieve?”

2. Ensure that the organisation is investing behind the change.

It is pointless developing the worlds greatest strategy but not providing the necessary resources to execute the strategy.

3. Make sure the entire organisation is motivated to go the journey.

Employees who understand how their role fits into the overall strategy feel more connected to the purpose of their organisation.
